Wha a Gwaan?

A look at the world impact of Jamaican language

Jamaican Creole (patwa or patois) has been widely dispersed and had an impact on people all over the world. In our first Abeng News video magazine, we speak with Dr Joseph Farquharson, coordinator of the Jamaican Language Unit at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona campus about “wha a gwaan”. He speaks on how the language spread and what potential it offers to the country where its own language isn’t taken as seriously as it has been abroad by individuals and universities the likes of Harvard in the USA, and York U in Toronto, Canada. The Feature premiered live Thursday, June 25 at 5:15 pm EDT on YouTube.
