This year marks the first in observing World Malaria Day (April 25). The initiative, formerly known as Africa Malaria Day from 2001-2007, was designed to raise global awareness of the disease. In May 2007, the World Health Assembly concluded that despite malaria’s high death toll and financial costs, global awareness remains low. Hence, the Assembly deemed April 25 an annual event to educate the worldwide general public on the disease and on ways malaria can be prevented.

This UNICEF video was shot in Africa but where there is a flood there will be pools of stagnant water and mosquitos, the carriers of malaria, making it urgent for the Caribbean to be on guard:
